SZX Airport China: Fly Shenzhen If Shenzhen Is the Trip

SZX Airport China: Fly Shenzhen If Shenzhen Is the Trip

Shenzhen Walking Days Start at Bao'an

If your destination is Shenzhen, the airport code on your ticket is SZX — Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport. This page is about what happens after you land at SZX. For the broader question of which gateway to fly into when the trip also involves Guangzhou or other Pearl River Delta cities, the China airports page covers that comparison separately.

One distinction that is worth making before anything else: SZX is not a secondary gateway to Guangzhou. Guangzhou's airport is CAN (Baiyun International Airport). The two airports are 130 km apart by road. If your ticket says CAN and you are going to Shenzhen, that is a separate domestic flight, not a transfer. SZX is Shenzhen.

What Bao'an is not: it is not in the city center. The airport sits on the edge of Bao'an District, south of central Shenzhen, roughly 40–60 minutes by road to the main tourist areas in Luohu and Futian. The drive is not a walk. Arrange the transfer before landing.

Hong Kong Adds a Second Immigration

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) sits on the opposite side of the Pearl River Estuary from Shenzhen. Travelers who search for Shenzhen airport sometimes arrive at HKG because Hong Kong is in the search history or because a fare aggregator routed through Hong Kong. HKG and SZX are not the same airport. They are in different cities with different immigration systems.

If you land at HKG and intend to go to Shenzhen by land, the crossing is a second immigration event — you clear Hong Kong exit controls and then mainland Chinese entry controls, in sequence. This takes time. The buffer you need depends on whether you have a mainland visa already, whether your passport qualifies for the 240-hour transit exemption, and whether you are crossing by coach, train, or private car.

One thing that catches first-timers: SkyPier. SkyPier is a transit facility at HKG that allows a same-day transfer from an international flight to a high-speed ferry or coach without clearing Hong Kong immigration — but only for travelers whose onward travel originates from the SkyPier terminal itself. It is not a Shenzhen arrival option for a trip that starts at the airport gate. SkyPier is a transfer product for travelers who booked it specifically. If you did not book a SkyPier transit, it is not available to you at arrival.

For the 240-hour transit exemption pathway — which nationalities qualify, which mainland entry ports accept it, and how it applies when entering from Hong Kong — the 240-hour visa-free transit page has the current rules.

The Car Meets the District You Will Actually Use

Shenzhen is a city of districts. The walking areas that visitors use most are in three different directions from Bao'an:

  • Luohu and Deng Xiaoping's signature district. The original Shenzhen — the area that changed fastest from 1980 onward. The window district, the local food streets, and the boundary marker that marks the Hong Kong border are here. This is the walking ground for a first Shenzhen visit.
  • Futian and CBD. The financial district. The Shenzhen Museum and the Civic Center area are here. This is the daytime district — quieter in the evenings than Luohu.
  • Shekou and Sea World. The coastal district west of central Shenzhen. The departure point for the Shenzhen–Hong Kong ferry (not to be confused with the SkyPier transit at HKG), and an area with a different pace from the city center. Shekou has a cluster of international restaurants and the Sea World pier area, which is walkable in a different way from Luohu.

None of these districts is a short walk from the airport. The first decision after landing is not which district to visit — it is whether to go to the district today or tomorrow. A late-night arrival means tomorrow. An afternoon arrival can reach Luohu or Futian in 60–90 minutes by private car, but the arrival day should be a light one.

For the three-day Shenzhen itinerary that fits a first visit — which districts to use, which sites belong to which days — the Shenzhen three-day itinerary page has the shape. For the question of whether to add a coastal day or stay in the city center, the Shenzhen private tour page covers the two options.

What to Arrange Before You Land

Three things to have in place before the flight lands at SZX:

TravelToQin will match the optimal travel vehicle based on the number of travelers
  • Private car or registered taxi. Do not plan to catch public transport from Bao'an with luggage on a first Shenzhen visit. The metro works for travelers who are staying in Bao'an District or who arrive without heavy bags. For everyone else, a pre-arranged car removes the question of where the taxi stand is.
  • Hotel confirmation. Shenzhen hotel clusters are in Luohu, Futian, and Shekou. Confirm the hotel district before booking the airport transfer — the drive from Bao'an to Shekou takes roughly 75–90 minutes in normal traffic.
  • Visa status. If your passport qualifies for the 240-hour transit exemption at the mainland entry point you are using, confirm that SZX is on the eligible port list before routing through Hong Kong. The list is on the National Immigration Administration notice and updates without advance notice.

Where TravelToQin Can Help

If Shenzhen is the arrival city on a private tour, we arrange the airport pickup against the flight number, dispatch the vehicle to the hotel in the correct district, and hand the first-day shape to the driver-guide before you land. If the itinerary also includes Guangzhou, we handle the Shenzhen-to-Guangzhou transfer separately — the two cities are 130 km apart by road, and the crossing takes 90–120 minutes in normal conditions.

What we do not do: promise a specific immigration clearance time at any crossing, guarantee a 240-hour exemption outcome, or arrange SkyPier transit — that is a separate booking product with its own eligibility rules.

Send the arrival flight number and the hotel district. We will confirm the pickup and the day-one shape.
