Guangzhou Airport: T2 or T3, Then the Right Side of Town

Almost every flight to “Guangzhou” lands at the same place, and the place is changing shape. Baiyun International Airport (CAN) is your real destination for the city; the rest is reading the boarding pass. As of 7 May 2026, Terminal 1 is closed for redevelopment. The two active buildings are T2 and T3, and which one is on your ticket decides which side of town is closer.

CAN is Guangzhou's only airport for the city

There's no second airport for downtown Guangzhou. If your flight ticket reads CAN, you are landing at Baiyun. Any other code on the ticket means a different city.

• CAN = Guangzhou Baiyun. About 28 km north of the city, roughly 40–60 minutes by car to Tianhe, Yuexiu, or Pazhou depending on traffic.
• SZX = Shenzhen Bao'an. About 130 km southeast of central Guangzhou. You cannot drive across in less than 90 minutes, and borderless in-city transfer is rare.
• ZUH = Zhuhai Jinwan. Off the Macau arc; not useful for Guangzhou except as a deliberate stop.
• WUX / HKG / MFM. Not Guangzhou. China airports covers the country at large.

Two airports (Baiyun and Foshan Shadi, often labeled FUO) sit close enough that a search engine sometimes confuses them. Foshan's terminal is for Foshan city and the high-speed rail south arc. It will not be labeled CAN.

The two terminals at CAN

Since 7 May 2026, Terminal 1 has been decommissioned for redevelopment. The two operational terminals handle different flight mixes. The boarding pass or airline app tells you which one you're on. This matters: T2 and T3 sit on different sides of the access road, and the rail station, parking, and ride-hail pickup points are split accordingly.

• Terminal 2 (T2). Opened in 2018. Most China Southern Airlines domestic and international routes use it. Direct metro link (Line 3 North Extension). Underground transit level with ride-hail stands and parking.
• Terminal 3 (T3). Opened in 2025. The newest terminal. Hainan Airlines, several foreign carriers, and a growing share of international services run out of here. Connected by automated people mover to T2 and to a dedicated transit hall.
• Terminal 1 (T1). Closed for redevelopment as of 7 May 2026. If a guide, a map, or a 2024 blog post tells you to follow T1 signs — it's outdated. Ignore.

Always reconfirm the terminal on the boarding pass at the gate. Terminal reassignments happen close to departure, especially for codeshare flights.

Picking the right vehicle and the right side of town

Once the terminal is decided, the rest depends on whether you came for a fair, a business meeting, or a few days of city exploration.

• Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair Complex at Pazhou). Fair dates and shifts are on cantonfair.org.cn. Pazhou is south of the river, closer to T3 by direct route via Huaxia Road. Plan for an hour from T2 and 35–50 minutes from T3 outside peak traffic.
• Downtown hotels (Tianhe, Yuexiu, Shamian, Yongqing Lane). T2 and T3 sit roughly the same distance to the city center. Both take 40–60 minutes; aim for off-peak hours if you can.
• Gorge day (Gulong Gorge). The 3D2N Guangzhou three-day runs D2 at Gulong Gorge, an hour and a half north of central Guangzhou. Build the day plan around being out the door by 8:00 am.

Yuexiu Park, Shamian Island, and Yongqing Lane read better on a private car drop-off with a 4–5 minute walk to the gate than on a taxi that circles the block. Guangzhou private tour and the broader Guangzhou itinerary page cover the city's on-the-ground pattern.

Transit, overnight, and connection choices

Guangzhou sits inside China's high-speed rail map, and the airport-to-rail handoff is what gets missed. South China bullet trains depart from Guangzhou South (GZN), not from CAN itself. Allow 60–75 minutes by metro or private car from either terminal to Guangzhou South.

• Same-day connections: budget 3–4 hours door-to-door from CAN landing to high-speed train departure, including immigration, baggage, transit, and station check-in.
• Overnight layover: airport-area hotels within 5–10 minutes of either terminal via the airport expressway cluster. North Terminal hotels (T2 side) are denser; T3 side is newer but sparser for now.
• Visa-free transit: many nationalities now qualify under the 240-hour transit scheme; rules and eligible entry points sit on the official notice at booking time. 240-hour visa-free transit covers the policy as it stands.

CAN is not a gateway to Guilin or Yangshuo

A common search traps a first-timer: “Guilin” doesn't fly via CAN unless you've booked a separate Guangzhou–Guilin flight. The direct international gateways to Guilin are Guilin Liangjiang (KWL), typically via domestic connections, not CAN itself. If you want Guilin as the first city, use KWL or fly to Guangzhou and add a connecting flight or a high-speed rail transfer (Guangzhou South to Guilin, ~2 hours).

Bypassing the wrong gateway eats up half a day and is the single most common beginner mistake on this route.

What must be verified on the day

• The terminal on your boarding pass (re-confirm after any flight change).
• Whether your visa status allows entry, or whether the 240-hour transit applies at this entry point.
• Canton Fair dates and venue shifts if visiting for a fair.
• Taxi, ride-hail, or pre-arranged driver pickup instructions based on terminal.
• Metro or people-mover hours and the latest service notices.
