@ Tian'an Men Square — the world's largest public square, flanked by the National Museum and the Great Hall of the People.

@ The Forbidden City (closed Mondays) — the 600-year-old imperial palace complex with 980 buildings across 72 hectares, home to the Ming and Qing emperors.

* Mutianyu Great Wall · Summer Palace

~ Morning

@ Mutianyu Great Wall — a well-restored section north of Beijing surrounded by forest. Cable car ride up; toboggan slide down.

@ Summer Palace — China's best-preserved imperial garden, centred on Kunming Lake with painted long corridors and hilltop pavilions.

@ Drop off to hotel. Dinner at a recommended restaurant.

* Bell & Drum Towers · Shicha Lake · Temple of Heaven · Nanluoguxiang

~ Morning

@ Bell Tower and Drum Tower — Ming-dynasty timekeeping towers overlooking the old city. Shicha Lake — three scenic lakes with historic courtyard mansions. Optional: rickshaw tour in hutong.

~ Afternoon

@ Temple of Heaven — 15th-century ceremonial complex. Optional: Tai Chi class or Chinese calligraphy class.

~ Night

@ Nanluoguxiang — historic hutong lane with indie boutiques and snack stalls. Drop off to hotel. Dinner at a recommended restaurant.

* Gubei Water Town · Simatai Great Wall

@ Breakfast. 2-hour drive to Gubei Water Town — a beautifully restored ancient riverside village at the foot of the Simatai Great Wall section.

@ Simatai Great Wall — one of the few sections open after dark, known for its steep, unrestored character and dramatic ridge-top views.
