Guangzhou South Is Not Baiyun Airport

External appearance of Guangzhou South Station

If your search returned "Guangzhou South Railway Station," you are arriving by rail, not by air. The two Guangzhou gateways serve different directions: Baiyun International Airport (CAN) handles most international flights and some domestic routes. Guangzhou South Railway Station (GZS) is the high-speed rail hub for the city, handling the Beijing–Guangzhou corridor, the Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link, and routes to Guangxi, Guizhou, and the Pearl River Delta cities.

The two are in different parts of the city. Baiyun Airport is north of the old city center. Guangzhou South is in Panyu District, south of the center. If you flew into CAN and are now looking at GZS, these are not interchangeable names for the same place.

For the airport side of the choice — which route arrives at which gateway and which direction Guangzhou sits in for the trip — the China airports page covers the broader gateway question. This page covers what happens after the train pulls into Guangzhou South.

Three Directions, Three Different Cars

Guangzhou South Station sits in Panyu District, south of the old city. The three things most visitors come to Guangzhou for are in three different directions from the station, and none of them are a short walk:

  • Shamian Island and Chen Clan Academy. On the western side of the old city, roughly 20–25 km from Guangzhou South by road. This is the third day in a standard three-day Guangzhou itinerary — not the arrival day.
  • The Canton Fair complex at Pazhou. In Haizhu District, east of the old city center, roughly 20–27 km from Guangzhou South. If you are in Guangzhou for the trade fair, Pazhou is the destination. It is not the same direction as Shamian Island or the Gulongxia Ravine.
  • Gulongxia Ravine . North of the city in the Conghua District, roughly 50–60 km from Guangzhou South. This is a full-day trip, usually the second day in a standard itinerary. It is not close to the station and it is not an arrival-day activity.

The practical implication: when the train pulls into Guangzhou South, the first decision is not which site to visit — it is which direction to head and whether to go there today or tomorrow. The city center is 15–20 km from the station. Pazhou is a different direction again. Gulongxia is a third direction entirely.

For the full Guangzhou shape, the Guangzhou itinerary page covers what fits in two or three nights. For the private ground option, the Guangzhou private tour page covers how a private vehicle changes the day.

Do Not Sleep at the Station for a Three-Day City Stay

Hotels near Guangzhou South Station are convenient for catching a connecting train the next morning. They are not convenient for a three-day city visit. Shamian Island, the Chen Clan Academy, and the old city food streets are on the western side of Guangzhou — 20–25 km from the Panyu station area. Adding that drive to every evening after a full sightseeing day is how a three-night Guangzhou trip starts to feel short.

The standard three-night Guangzhou itinerary runs:

  • Day 2: Gulongxia Ravine. Full day, north of the city. The vehicle drives out in the morning, spends the day in the ravine, and returns in the evening. This is not compatible with an early-morning flight or a late-evening arrival the night before.
  • Day 3: Shamian Island and Chen Clan Academy. The colonial architecture and the clan hall in the old city. This is the walkable day — good for the afternoon after the Gulongxia day.

If the trip coincides with the Canton Fair, Pazhou takes priority and the day shape changes. The fair grounds are in Haizhu District, and hotel availability in the nearby area tightens significantly during the exhibition period. The Guangzhou itinerary page covers the fair-week adjustments in more detail.

Send the arrival time, the number of nights, and whether the fair is a factor — we will tell you which direction makes sense for the arrival day and whether a hotel near the station or in the old city fits the itinerary better.
