Paying in China: Pick a Wallet Before You Land, Keep Cash

Paying in China is a QR wallet first, not a Visa tap at lunch. Set up one wallet before you land. Keep WeChat as a backup.

QR Codes Run the Day

On ordinary days in China, paying means scanning a QR code. Not a plastic card tap, not a bank transfer — a scan. Hotels and some airport desks still take international cards. A street noodle stall, a park ticket window, and a local taxi do not. Pick one wallet before you land.

Choose One Wallet First

Alipay and WeChat Pay are the two options. Both work for tourists with international phones. Alipay has a cleaner English interface and is marginally more reliable for hotel and larger merchant transactions. WeChat Pay has the deeper merchant penetration at small vendors and is the better backup if Alipay fails for any reason.

The Alipay for foreigners guide covers the setup steps in detail. The WeChat pay guide covers the alternative. The eSIM guide covers the phone setup that makes both wallets work — without a Chinese phone number and mobile data, neither wallet functions on the street.

Set up Alipay first. Add WeChat Pay as the backup. Test both at a small merchant before you need them urgently.

Keep Cash as Backup

China is not entirely cashless. Small vendors in less-touristed areas, some rural train stations, and a minority of family restaurants still operate on cash. The bank card as a primary plan does not work — international cards are not accepted at QR-code merchants, and most small vendors do not have card terminals.

The practical backup is: one wallet (Alipay), one backup wallet (WeChat Pay), and one ATM card for cash withdrawal at a Bank of China or ICBC ATM when both digital wallets are unavailable. The ATM withdrawal limit and exchange rate are the bank's terms that day.

What TTQ Can Arrange

TravelToQin can include WeChat Pay and Alipay setup assistance as part of the pre-arrival briefing for any China itinerary. We cannot open a wallet account for a client — that is a personal banking function. We can provide the correct process, the order to complete steps, and the contact information for each wallet's international support if something goes wrong during setup.
