Do I need a visa to go to China is a routing question, not a personality test. Most round-trip holidays need a tourist (L) visa. A smaller set can use 240-hour transit if the tickets are a genuine third-country transit. A still smaller set can use unilateral visa-free entry when that passport is on the National Immigration Administration list at the time of travel. China does not treat visa on arrival as the default tourist door at Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou.
This page only splits the paths. Paperwork for a tourist (L) visa is on China tourist visa. Transit and US-origin pairing stay on their own pages once you know which path you are on.

Americans asking “do you need a visa” are still on this tree. Flight pairing for a US passport is on can Americans travel to China. Ground nights that might fit a short transit window look like a Beijing 4–5 day block, a four-day Xi'an warriors day, or a Shanghai 3-day finish — not a visa-free “China tour” product name.

Most Western passports should not plan to collect a tourist visa at PEK, PVG, or CAN as if it were a stamp machine. Some regional policies exist (Hainan is the example people quote). Those are not “China visa on arrival.” Confirm them on official channels if your route is actually that region. A full-country itinerary is a poor bet at the first immigration desk.
240-hour transit is not a landing tourist visa under another name. The tickets have to match the transit story, or the officer has a different file than you do.
TravelToQin can check whether your night count fits the path you think you are on, and can build private ground once that path is real. We do not file your visa, we do not guarantee approval, and we do not “package” an L visa as included in a land quote.
If the path is already clear, open the matching article. If two passports in one family sit on different paths, or business and leisure are mixed on one ticket, send the nationalities and the routing through contact. After the visa layer, US-origin tour questions belong on China tours from USA.
