Whether you need a China tourist visa depends on your passport and how you will enter—not on a one-size-fits-all checklist. If you need a tourist (L) visa, treat processing time as a calendar block—especially before summer peaks and the statutory holiday windows—not as a hope that approval arrives the week you fly.

Documents that tell one coherent story

Consulates publish their own lists. The row below is a typical L-visa file, not a substitute for the checklist on your embassy site.

• Passport — valid, with blank pages as the consulate requires.
• Application form and photo — size and background as that office specifies.
• Itinerary — cities and nights that match the rest of the file. A twenty-city week that you cannot walk is a weak story.
• Hotels or a host letter — as required for your nationality and office.
• Flights — reservations are common; buying non-refundable tickets before approval is the usual mistake.
• Proof of funds or employment — if that office asks. Copy last year’s blog only if it still matches this year’s PDF.

A timeline that does not lock the trip

• Before you apply — confirm the office, the appointment system, and whether a visa center is required.
• While the file is in — hold refundable or changeable flights and hotels. Peak Chinese holidays make both scarcer.
• After approval — check the number of entries, the validity window, and the duration of stay printed on the visa. Archive a scan before you fly.
