Shanghai Things to Do: Sequence the Bund and Yu Garden at Night
Shanghai's best things to do are not a checklist but a sequence: pair the Bund with Yu Garden at night, not midday, to see illuminated skylines and traditional rooftops while avoiding daytime crowds and redundant transit. Most first-time visitors try to cover the Bund, Yu Garden, and a water town in one rushed day, then spend hours in traffic. That is a common mistake.
This guide covers the core sequence for a private tour, with options for 3, 5, or 7 days depending on the specific itinerary. We focus on what actually works for private guests, not a generic list of attractions.
What Are the Best Things to Do in Shanghai for a First-Time Visitor?
Shanghai's best things to do are not a checklist but a sequence: pair the Bund with Yu Garden at night, not midday, to see illuminated skylines and traditional rooftops while avoiding daytime crowds and redundant transit. The Bund and Yu Garden sit in different districts, so visiting them separately wastes time in traffic. A private tour can link them in one evening, which is a sequencing advantage specific to our itineraries.
For a 3-day private tour, the core sequence is: Day 1 Bund and Nanjing Road, Day 2 Yu Garden and City God Temple, Day 3 Zhujiajiao Water Town. For a 5-day private tour, add a full day at Shanghai Disney Resort and a half-day at Shanghai Museum or Tianzifang. For a 7-day private tour, include a day trip to Suzhou or Hangzhou by high-speed rail, with buffer for peak-hour traffic.
- 3 days: Bund, Nanjing Road, Yu Garden, City God Temple, Zhujiajiao Water Town.
- 5 days: Add Shanghai Disney Resort and a half-day at Shanghai Museum or Tianzifang.
- 7 days: Add a day trip to Suzhou or Hangzhou by high-speed rail.
These sequences are based on our current private tour products: Shanghai 3 Days 2 Nights Tour, Shanghai 5 Days 4 Nights Tour, and Shanghai 7 Days 6 Nights Tour. Each has a fixed daily order, so you know what to expect.
One Evening Covers the Bund and Yu Garden
Pair the Bund with Yu Garden at night to see both illuminated skylines and traditional rooftops, avoiding daytime crowds and redundant travel—a sequencing advantage specific to our private tour itineraries. The Bund is a waterfront promenade facing the Pudong skyline; Yu Garden Mall has ornamental rooftops and lanterns reflected on the moat. They are about 20 minutes apart by car without traffic, but rush hour can double that.

Half day: Start at Yu Garden Mall after dinner, then drive to the Bund for the night view. This works for travelers who want a compact evening without rushing.

Zhujiajiao Water Town Fits a Half-Day
Zhujiajiao Water Town is a practical half-day escape from central Shanghai, reachable by private car in about 1.5 hours with traffic buffer, and appears on Day 3 of the 3-day tour and Day 4 of the 7-day tour. It has stone arch bridges, canal-side Ming-and-Qing houses, and a traditional boat ride. You need at least 3 hours there to walk the main lanes and take a boat.

- Leave central Shanghai by 8:30 AM to avoid the worst traffic.
- Wear comfortable shoes; the stone paths are uneven.
- Bring cash for small purchases, though mobile payment is common.

Disney Day Works Best on a Weekday
Shanghai Disney Resort is best scheduled on a weekday to reduce wait times, but official park hours and ticket availability must be checked; it is included on Day 4 of the 5-day tour and Day 5 of the 7-day tour. Weekends and Chinese holidays draw large crowds, so a Tuesday or Wednesday visit is smarter. The resort is in Pudong, about 40 minutes from the Bund by car without traffic.

With kids: Book the Disney day mid-trip, not on arrival, so children are rested. Without kids: Skip Disney and use that day for Tianzifang or the Shanghai Museum.
We cannot guarantee wait times or ride availability. Check the official Disney site before booking.
Plan Around Shanghai's Peak-Hour Traffic
All land transfers in Shanghai, including the 1.5-hour drive to Zhujiajiao and any high-speed rail day trips, must include a buffer for peak-hour congestion; do not assume optimistic arrival times. Morning rush is roughly 7:30–9:30 AM, evening rush 5:00–7:30 PM. A cross-district trip that takes 30 minutes at noon can take 60 minutes at 6 PM.

- Schedule long drives before 8 AM or after 7 PM.
- Avoid crossing the Huangpu River during rush hour.
- For high-speed rail day trips, leave at least 90 minutes for station transfer.
This is where a private car and driver help: you control the departure time and can adjust on the fly. For more on train logistics, see Shanghai to Beijing Train: Door-to-Door Time vs Flying.
Choose Your Shanghai Itinerary by Days
Depending on the specific itinerary, Shanghai private tours range from 3 to 7 days, each with a distinct daily sequence. The 3-day tour covers the core city and Zhujiajiao; the 5-day tour adds Disney and a cultural half-day; the 7-day tour adds a day trip to Suzhou or Hangzhou. There is no single best length—it depends on your pace and interests.
- Short stay (3 days): Choose the Shanghai 3 Days 2 Nights Tour if you want the essential sequence without Disney.
- With kids (5 days): Choose the Shanghai 5 Days 4 Nights Tour to include a Disney day.
- Extended exploration (7 days): Choose the Shanghai 7 Days 6 Nights Tour to add a day trip to Suzhou or Hangzhou.
We cannot create extra tickets or guarantee park availability. What we do is sequence your days so you spend less time in transit and more time at each place. Send your Shanghai nights and walking limits through contact.
