China Itinerary 7 Days: Two Realistic Routes (Not Three Cities in One Week)

A China itinerary 7 days fails when it tries to prove that Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Guilin, and Chengdu can all fit into one neat week. They can fit on a map. They do not fit inside real transfer days, jet lag, museum tickets, station queues, and human energy.

Seven days should be built as either a two-city classic route or a one-region depth route. Anything more needs very hard cuts.

• Route A: Beijing 4 nights + Xi'an 2 nights + departure buffer. Best for first-timers who want imperial Beijing and the Terracotta Army.
• Route B: Shanghai 3 nights + Hangzhou/Suzhou or Zhujiajiao 2 nights + departure buffer. Best for softer walking, food, canal towns, and East China pace.
• Do not do: Beijing + Xi'an + Shanghai in seven days unless you accept that one city becomes a transit photo stop.

Route A: Beijing and Xi'an in 7 Days

Days 1-4: Beijing

Do not put the Great Wall on arrival afternoon. Long flights and mountain steps are a poor combination.

Day 5: Beijing to Xi'an

Days 6-7: Xi'an

Keep the Terracotta Army as the main event, then add city wall, Muslim Quarter, or Shaanxi History Museum depending on ticket availability and walking tolerance. A full Xi'an week is better, but a two-night block can still work if Beijing carried the first half.

Route B: Shanghai and East China in 7 Days

Days 1-3: Shanghai

Leave space for delayed weather, shopping, or one unhurried meal. East China works best when the final day is not a sprint from canal town to airport.

What to Cut First

1. Third major city: it usually costs a full day once stations, hotels, and luggage are counted.
2. Theme park day: keep it only if Disney is the reason for the trip.
3. Duplicate old towns: one canal town is enough in a short week.
4. Back-to-back long walks: do not put Great Wall, Forbidden City, and a major museum on consecutive full days for older travelers.
