PVG Airport China: Check Your Ticket for T1 or T2, Then Stay in the City

September 11, 2026

TravelToQin Editorial Team

Travelers searching for PVG airport China have already booked Shanghai Pudong as their arrival. The remaining questions are practical: which terminal they land in, how to get to the city, and what to do with the arrival day. This page is for that post-booking moment, not for choosing Shanghai.

The airline and the ticket determine the terminal. The city center is 30 to 60 minutes by road. The arrival day is for the Bund and the hotel area; Zhujiajiao is for the next day.

PVG Is Shanghai — After You Have Already Chosen Shanghai

PVG is Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the international hub on the east side of the city. The domestic alternative is SHA — Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, on the west side of the city. Travelers who have booked a flight into PVG have already decided on the Pudong route; the question now is execution.

For travelers still deciding between Shanghai and another arrival city, the city comparison is on a separate page.

International Arrivals Leave Through T1 or T2

Shanghai Pudong has two main terminals for international flights: T1 and T2. A third terminal (T3) is under construction; the operational status changes without notice, so the boarding pass is the operational truth.

Three checks on arrival day:

  • The boarding pass terminal. The terminal number is printed on the boarding pass. Travel to the terminal printed on the pass, not the terminal the airline usually uses.
  • The Shanghai Airport Authority site. The current terminal allocation by airline is on the official channel; check the day of the visit.
  • The immigration and customs flow. The international arrival flow (immigration, baggage, customs) is consistent across T1 and T2; the difference is the gate and the connecting transport.

The Maglev train runs between Longyang Road station (the metro interchange near Pudong) and Pudong International Airport. It is a 7-minute ride and a clean novelty. The Maglev is not the fastest route — a private vehicle or a taxi is faster door-to-door from central Shanghai. The Maglev is an experience, not a default.

How to Get to the City

Three transport options from Pudong to the city center:

  • Private vehicle (the default for our trips): 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic and destination district. The Bund hotels are 40 to 50 minutes; Jing'an hotels are 50 to 70 minutes.
  • Maglev + Metro: Maglev to Longyang Road (7 minutes), then Metro Line 2 to Nanjing Road or Nanjing West Road (about 30 minutes). Total 45 to 60 minutes including transfer. Cheaper than the private vehicle.
  • Taxi: 40 to 60 minutes depending on destination and traffic. Meter rate plus the highway toll.

For travelers with checked luggage and a hotel in the Bund or French Concession area, the private vehicle is the practical choice. For travelers with carry-on only and a Metro-accessible hotel, the Maglev + Metro is workable.

What to Do on the Arrival Day

The arrival day is for the Bund, the hotel, and an easy dinner. It is not for Zhujiajiao, not for the Yu Garden in detail, not for a half-day tour to anywhere outside the city.

The Bund at night is the practical arrival-evening plan: a 1.5 km walk along the western riverfront with the Pudong skyline lit across the Huangpu River. The walk is flat, well-lit, and accessible from most central hotels. Dinner in the Bund area or the French Concession is the standard arrival-evening meal.

Zhujiajiao Comes After the Arrival Night

Zhujiajiao Water Town is a 1 to 1.5 hour drive from central Shanghai. It fits as Day 2 or Day 3 on a three-night Shanghai itinerary, not as an arrival-day excursion. The arrival night is for sleep, not for a 4 to 5 hour round trip to a water town.

Travelers who try to land at PVG, clear immigration, drop bags at the hotel, and reach Zhujiajiao by mid-afternoon will be exhausted by 5 p.m. The water town is for the next day.

What This Page Does Not Cover

This page covers the post-booking execution for a PVG arrival. It does not cover:

  • The decision between Shanghai and another arrival city — covered on a separate comparison page
  • The Yu Garden in detail — covered on the Yu Garden article page
  • The full three-night Shanghai itinerary — covered on the three-night Shanghai product page
  • The Hangzhou day trip from Shanghai — covered on the Hangzhou article page

Travelers with a Hangzhou add-on (for example, a Hangzhou 2-night extension after a Shanghai arrival) should keep the arrival night in Shanghai. The Hangzhou transfer is Day 2 or Day 3, not the arrival night.

What TravelToQin Can Help With

For trips we plan, we coordinate the airport pick-up at the terminal printed on the boarding pass, the private vehicle to the city hotel, and the arrival-evening plan around the Bund area. We do not guarantee the immigration queue time, the customs flow, or the traffic to the city.

Send your flight number, arrival time, and the terminal on your boarding pass through contact. The first reply confirms the pickup plan and the arrival-evening suggestion.
